What began as a seed of an idea at Kidsfirst Sumner grew into a world of exploration in 2014 – just from one apple tree, which provided many opportunities for the tamariki to engage with nature, learn, try, taste and play.
Sumner has always been well connected to its community. In return, that community has been keen to lend a hand for whatever the kindergarten needed.
In 2001 the hill at Sumner Kindergarten underwent a transformation. With hours of collaboration with the community and hands-on teamwork from children and parents alike, the hillside developed from what was a simple patch of land into a beautiful, sculptured feature that reflects Sumner Kindergarten and its community. Children and whānau helped create an environment where they knew they had a place.
Sumner Kindergarten featured in the old Christchurch Kindergarten Chronicles many times over its history. Below are some of our favourite extracts.
“Since its opening the Kindergarten has had a capacity of thirty (and a waiting list!)… Our sunny section is ideal as a play space and each week sees the grass trying hard to sprout in our sandy soil.” – Christchurch Kindergarten Chronicle, 1948.
“After much encouragement (and several major operations), our lawn is sprouting nicely, and the children have been waiting with bated breath for the time when they can run and skip on it again.” – Christchurch Kindergarten Chronicle, 1949.
A group of Sumner Kindergarten supporters and members of the Establishment Committee gather at the kindergarten to celebrate its progress.
Their trusty green watering can gets quite the work out, especially over the summer months, as the young gardeners make sure all the plants and flowers are well hydrated and happy.
