A regular at their local parades, Alexandra kindergarten tamariki have been known for being creative with their floats for a number of years.

We’re still digging through the cupboards and opening old boxes, talking to current and previous teachers and piecing together the story of our kindergarten. It’s not always easy to remember everything, or to find that photo album from years ago – but we’re looking, and loving what we’re finding.

Visit this page again soon and you’ll see a whole lot more about the road that’s brought us to where we are today.

And if you have anything you think we’d like to see, please send it to us.

Showing their Southern pride – these young Highlanders fans love to support their favourite rugby team.

Alexandra A&P Show float

The kindergarten has always been active in their community – this float was constructed for the Alexandra Blossom Festival in 1983.

Memories from our kindergarten album:

  • A visit from the local fire engine meant tamariki got a turn with the powerful firehose. Date unknown.

  • Kapa haka is always a popular activity, with these tamariki getting ready for a performance for whānau.

  • Kindergartens have long had big, open spaces for tamariki to run around, and they’re great for a picnic. Date unknown.

  • Former Prime Minister, Sir John Key, visits Alexandra kindergarten in the early 2010s.

  • Indoor play has come a long way since kindergarten began, but still requires two vital ingredients: friends and fun. Date unknown.

  • Though technology has changed, and times have shifted, tamariki still find joy in the same, simple things. Date unknown.

  • The ever-popular Trikeathon, seen here in 1982, never fails to draw a big, supportive crowd.
