Abstract BannerDiamond Harbour

Kidsfirst Diamond Harbour was opened on the 2nd of February, 2015.

The first Kidsfirst centre to open in over twenty years, it was a fantastic chance to purpose-build a wonderful kindergarten space – inside and out.

As the Board worked with Opus Architects, they had a real chance to design and create a building that would be as environmentally friendly as possible, and include state-of-the-art features for our generation’s newest learners.

The centre features those all important opportunities for exploration, adventure and challenge, with the chance to play and inspire the imagination. By design, Kidsfirst environments have always had large and well resourced natural outdoor areas which are interesting and exciting places for adventure and play.

Both indoors and out the environments reflect our bicultural community and are a place where children are encouraged to think critically, enquire and wonder about their world. Where children are provided with challenges, intellectual stimulation, opportunities to take risks safely, and social support appropriate to their age and abilities.

Being a building for young children, Opus Architect Kate Loader was incredibly aware of the environmental impact it would have, “They are the next generation and it’s impossible to think of designing and building their centre without considering the impact the building may have on the world that the children will grow up in, and our responsibility for that.”

Some of its unique features include architecture that is designed to lend itself to the natural landscape it sits on, and there are transitional learning environments created with a range of adaptable internal and external spaces. There will also be a simple graphic tool incorporated into the middle of the learning space, which will demonstrate the power generation and usage of the kindergarten to the children.

It has a focus on natural and renewable building materials:

  • Cedar cladding with no chemical treatment.
  • Low VOC (volatile organic compound) paints.
  • Formaldehyde-free plywood in the joinery.
  • The linoleum floor has a high recycled content (made of 97% raw materials).
  • Solar panels on the roof.

The kindergarten is efficiently heated with underfloor heating and sheep’s wool-blend insulation in the walls.

To make it environmentally sustainable and keep the environment in mind “seemed like the only option when designing this building,” according to Kate.

“To families these days, sustainability is just so important.”

The building is aiming to be net-zero energy, with any surplus that is generated being donated back to Diamond Harbour School. Normally the power goes back to the grid with money being earned for it, but this energy generation is a way for the kindergarten to give back to the school.

Because they are on the same site as Diamond Harbour School, there is a real sense of community and inter-generational interaction as children can graduate from the centre, move to Diamond Harbour School, and still maintain that contact with their friends and teachers for many more years.

The spirit of kindy extends far beyond our gates as the team took the message of Kidsfirst Kindergartens to community events.

Joy and wonder can be found in the world all around, do you know where to look?

Memories from our kindergarten album:

  • In 2017, Kidsfirst Diamond Harbour celebrated its opening with a fantastic get together of whānau, kaiako, tamariki, and other support staff.

  • The kindergarten’s purpose-built facilities provide care for tamariki aged from birth, meaning the kindergarten has some unique features.

  • The environment was informed by the surrounding area, and the kindergarten shares a fence with Diamond Harbour school, making the eventual transition to school a lot easier.

  • There are a few other visitors who sometimes poke their head through the fence, too!

  • Kidsfirst Chief Executive Sherryll Wilson, former ESM Nicki Parsons, and former board Chair Carolyne Grant attend the Kidsfirst Diamond Harbour opening in 2015.

  • The purpose-built kindergarten is the perfect place for tamariki to start their formal education, and was a welcome addition to the Diamond Harbour community.

  • The kindergarten’s opening gathered together locals from the surrounding community, tamariki, Kidsfirst staff, public figures, and many other invited guests.

  • Former Prime Minister, Sir John Key, was able to get a first-hand look at some of the fantastic learning tamariki do every day at kindergarten.

  • For it’s opening, a special advertising campaign was conceived to inform the public of the new kindergarten.

  • Anticipation built around the site, which took many months to put together, making sure it was ready for tamariki when they arrived.

  • Many past and present kaiako, as well as those who have given their time to Kidsfirst over the years were welcomed at the kindergarten’s opening.

  • Not only was it a fabulous day to catch up with old friends, but many tamariki got a look at the new kindergarten, too.

  • Rebecca Thomas – head teacher since the kindergarten’s opening, is extremely proud of the kindergarten, and its importance to their local community.

  • Once completed, the site offered a spectacularly suited location for tamariki to begin their formal education.

  • Nowadays, the kindergarten is a hub of activity – filled with creativity, excitement, learning, and laughter.

  • There’s room for everything, including the kindergarten’s purpose-built kitchen, and facilities for tamariki aged younger than two years old.

  • The kindergarten’s opening drew a large crowd, and also allowed for some special moments, like the blessing of the site by local iwi.

  • Kidsfirst Chief Executive, Sherryll Wilson, chats with Former Prime Minister, Sir John Key at the kindergarten’s opening.

  • Kidsfirst Board Members, past and present, were welcomed and acknowledged at the ceremony, too.

  • In day-to-day life, the kindergarten is always exciting –whether it’s digging in the sandpit, or spending time with friends – there’s always something to do.

  • Kidsfirst Business Development Manager, Jenny Pitama, attends the kindergarten’s opening day.

  • A conceptual drawing of Kidsfirst Diamond Harbour, prior to its construction.

  • Former Prime Minister, Sir John Key, is welcomed onto the site at the opening of Diamond Harbour kindergarten in 2015.

  • At the ceremony, he helped to plant a tree, which still stands in the kindergarten’s big backyard today.

  • Former Prime Minister, Sir John Key, holds a copy of the Kidsfirst 100 Years book, which was released for the Association’s centenary in 2011.

  • Kaiako, Max Apes, and Su Blacklock attend the opening of Kidsfirst Diamond Harbour in 2015.

  • In the following months after it’s opening, it was a common sight to see Kidsfirst banners at local community goings-on, as the good word about kindergarten was spread.

  • Kaiako, Ngam Brown, and Peter Fleming attend the Kidsfirst Diamond Harbour opening in 2015.

  • Prior to it’s opening, there was immense interest in the area about the prospect of a kindergarten, and a number of community meetings were held.

  • Although it has all of the fixings of a regular kindergarten, Diamond Harbour’s facilities are purpose-built, especially to serve their local community.

  • The kindergarten has large windows, which look out into their big backyard, meaning tamariki have lots of opportunities to be inspired.

  • The big backyard itself, pictured here not long after the kindergarten opened, is purpose-built, and includes features from the surrounding area.

  • Opus Architects worked hard to create a space that not only respected the surrounding area, but also was aware of the need for sustainability.

  • Clad with renewable building materials, tamariki for generations will be able to enjoy the purpose-built kindergarten.
