Abstract BannerBurnham

Burnham Kindergarten joined the Canterbury Westland Free Kindergarten Association on the 1st of July 1994.

A big delivery of sand was a welcome addition to these tamariki at Kidsfirst Burnham in the early 2000s.

Less than a year later, the Association undertook a complete overhaul of management practices, redrafted the Constitution and Charter, and developed our first strategic plan. On the national level, the early childhood curriculum was launched, Te Whāriki, which still forms the framework for our teaching today.

Throughout all of our kindergarten’s histories, there have been changes and developments that have made us stronger as an Association and network.

Smiles make their way around a kindy.

Kidsfirst Burnham’s extended whānau host a hangi for Matariki, date unknown.

Memories from our kindergarten album:

  • There’s so much to do at kindergarten, often, choosing can be the hardest part.

  • Curiosity is the name of the game in the mud kitchen.

  • Each kindergarten’s big backyard has plenty of nooks and crannies for exploration.

  • There’s nothing better than being led around your backyard by a gracious helper.

  • These young construction buffs at Kidsfirst Burnham embrace every aspect of play.

  • Burnham’s garden is a popular source of excitement for tamariki, who love helping to dig and plant.

  • Embracing creativity, and having the ability to express yourself are important for kindergarten-aged tamariki.

  • These tamariki are helping out with the landscaping of their big backyard.

  • This Christmas-themed wheelathon at Kidsfirst Burnham was a hit with whānau and tamariki alike.

  • Making stars out of sticks, or getting creative with unconventional materials is a common sight at kindergarten.

  • Water play at kindergarten is something that has filled summer days for generations of tamariki.

  • Burnham’s backyard has changed and adapted over the years, but the desire to create a place ideal for tamariki’s learning is always the same.

  • And the children love spending time in it with their friends and whānau.
