Science experiments are always a popular part of any kindergarten day, no matter the year.

Broomfield was established at a time of political turmoil, when budget and funding cuts were enacted and kindergarten teachers even took industrial stock work action over pay and conditions.

The 1980s were a time of significant change for the kindergarten movement, many places were operating between the new focus on early childhood education that had developed during the 1970s and the practicalities and financial constraints of the 1990s.

The big backyard has always played at important role at Kidsfirst Broomfield and is a source of discovery – as these tamariki fascinated by a sheet of ice from a puddle in 2012 demonstrate

Do you know your tamariki from your mokonui?

Memories from our kindergarten album:

  • Each kindergarten is unique, and follows the interests of their tamariki – which sometimes includes getting technical!

  • Creativity is encouraged – here, express themselves on their kindergarten’s windows.

  • Tamariki are engaged, and love to interact with those older and younger than them at kindergarten.

  • With big, shady trees comes a lot of leaves, and Autumn is always popular at Kidsfirst Broomfield.

  • Sometimes, there’s nothing better than spending some time with your good friends.

  • Getting messy in the sandpit is a staple of the kindergarten day.

  • These tamariki took part in a demonstration on plaster casts, each getting to try out what having one of their own was like.

  • Messy play, whether it’s inside or outside, is still a kindergarten favourite, to this day.

  • Broomfield kindergarten’s garden is always a hub of activity, filled all year round with seasonal vegetables.

  • There’s always so much to discover and learn, as seen here in 2012.

  • Lining up for a trikeathon in 2011.

  • It’s full speed ahead in the 2011 trikeathon.

  • In 2011 technology was entering the kindergarten, with a new generation who’d grown up with devices such as iPads, and digital cameras.

  • The flags were out to welcome tamariki to Kidsfirst Broomfield in 2011.

  • Christmas 2011 saw a surprise visit from Santa.

  • The big backyard doesn’t just have places to run and jump, but also to hide.

  • in 2011, after the earthquakes, Kidsfirst Broomfield had its own set of EQC inspectors.

  • in 2011, after the earthquakes, Kidsfirst Broomfield had its own set of EQC inspectors.

  • Kindergarten is a place where children can be themselves and grow and develop both skills and confidence.

  • The fascination with bugs and creepy crawlies has endured through the decades.

  • Christmas masks in 2011.

  • A happy (semi) painted face in 2011

  • Face painting was a lot of fun in 2011 at Kidsfirst Broomfield, Stay still!
