Bromley

Bromley Kindergarten opened on the 24th of October 1978 but it was originally known as Keighleys Road Free Kindergarten.

It wasn’t until 1 January 1998 that it became the first kindergarten to change its name in response to local committee wishes, and became known as Bromley Free Kindergarten.

By 1979 Bromley was one of 45 kindergartens operating across the Canterbury and Westland region and 1979 was also the International Year of the Child.

Bromley has always been surrounded by an active and generous community. In 2005 local residents and businesses including the Woolston/Linwood Rotary Club, Rainbow Children’s Health Trust, Community Trust, and architects Gerald Austin and Zane Lowe came together to celebrate the opening of a new playground at the kindergarten.

These local people had generously donated their time and money to the project and their contributions are indicative of other community support the kindergarten has received over the years.

For their 40th birthday, Bromley celebrated in style.

A well developed playground is always great for young tamariki to challenge themselves, and take risks.
Though every day brings something different at kindergarten, exploring the big backyard with friends is always popular.
Each big backyard has, for generations, offered unique opportunities for exploration and discovery.
Often tamariki can be seen out in their community – collecting waste, keeping the area clean, or just saying hello.
Kidsfirst Bromley often ventures beyond their kindergarten gates, to ensure they are doing their bit to be kaitiaki for their community.
Tamariki love gardening, and at kindergarten, it’s a fun activity you can share with your friends.
Popular as ever, kai time is the best time to catch up with your friends.
