Outdoor environments have always been important to our kindergarten movement and you can see this across our kindergartens, as with the big backyard at Kidsfirst Woolley St.
When kindergarten began way back in 1911, outdoor environments were seemingly bare when compared to what our kindys enjoy today, but nevertheless they were important…
“There should be light, airy buildings with pretty gardens and teachers trained in the latest methods of early childhood.”
That same philosophy exists today with an emphasis on how the fresh air, natural environment and the way that the outdoors give tamariki opportunities to explore, grow and develop.
There are, of course, more health and safety standards that have been put in place since 1911 but we’ve also had the benefit of utilising the new technologies available too. And fashions change, with natural plantings taking over and representing our connection to the land.
We can’t wait to see what our areas will look like in another 100 years!
Woolley St Kindergarten tamariki were excited by their new playground in 2003. Some of the equipment may have changed but it’s still all based on the same concepts of outdoor exploration and learning.
Racing around the Kidsfirst Woolley Street racetrack is always a popular activity.
